5-0 was the final score, giving Varsity Wrestling first place at the November 16th match. The boys beat three of our biggest competitors in class 5A, including Ola, Woodland, and Alexander. Coach Montesinos credits their win to hard work over the last few months, as well as to select students on the mats. Seniors Austin Thorton, Ara Johnson, and Jordan Cross, as well as Junior Tanner Buggs, came out undefeated in all of their matches. Junior Chase Tenety was also a large contributor to the win, clinching his matches against Alexander and Woodland.

“We are off to a good start, but our ultimate goal is to win state title,” Coach Jarrard said. After scoring so well against Woodland (36-35) and Alexander (40-33), they’re off to a good start. Alexander has consistently been the toughest competitor North has faced and to win those matches is a huge success. The hope to win the title echoes through the entire team, as well as through the school. The team has yet to win a state championship; the closest they’ve gotten was placing second in 2001, and then fourth in 2011. There’ve been four wrestlers to win state: Jeff Biggs in 1997 and 1998, Jeremy Hamilton in 2001, Jason Carroll in 2002, and Nick Newton in 2003. Every year, the boys have worked towards their goal and with the Alexander Duals under their belt, they could reach it.

North competes at West Forsyth on December 7th, searching for another win.
