After half a decade of constant construction, the restructuring of GA 400’s Exit 18, Browns Bridge Road, has concluded.
Connecting both sides of the freeway, the Browns Bridge redesign has been a long-awaited addition to the Forsyth county infrastructure. Rather than forcing drivers to enter onto the highway and back on or take a convoluted route around the highway itself, the project allowed more cars to cross the flyover bridge.
According to the Forsyth County website, the work began in 2014 with voters approving the 200 million dollar undertaking–or overpassing, I should say. But as with most government sanctioned plans, movement didn’t start until much later. In 2020, the project officially broke ground.
This was not without hiccups, though.
The first incident happened in December of 2023, well into the erection of the structure. Still in Phase 1, there was a potential design flaw with the bridge, requiring a stoppage of construction and an inspection. The result was a month delay and additional supports added. Phase 1 was concluded in the following November, with Phase 2 finishing in June of 2024–free traffic was finally allowed through again.
Unfortunately, another problem arose. In October, only four months later, there were cracks in the northwestern section of the bridge, resulting in a partial-shutdown and reconstruction. Many felt the clogging from the stoppage, making the project’s timeline feel even more drawn out.
Even with such trials and tribulations, the project carried on. And, after much, much, much waiting, the bridge was finally finished.
As of 2026, Exit 18 has a fully functional, flowing connector, eliciting much excitement.
Local English teacher Amy Bales says the bridge’s completion “has made [her] daily commute so much better,” cutting down her travel time to mere minutes now. She says it was “very much worth the wait.”
Senior Parker Aucoin shares his agreement, stating “there isn’t as much traffic.” He says previously, with the bridge’s former design, it took much too long to cross.
For every local in Coal Mountain, the completion of the Browns Bridge interchange has been a game-changer, redefining travel times and driving routes. Though it felt like an eternity of cones and concrete dust, it was well worth it for the smooth exit off 400.
