Two devastating shootings occurred on the afternoon of Sept. 10, resulting in only one significant casualty and several injuries.
Around 12:30 p.m., a 16-year-old student injured two students when he opened fire at Evergreen High School in Colorado.
The students’ identities and injuries remain anonymous, except for the suspect, Desmond Holly. The shooter shot the students and then himself with a handgun. There were three injured in total, with two in critical condition, including Holly himself.
Numerous students witnessed the devastation both inside and outside the building before scattering to various rooms of the school, and even other nearby schools, according to CBS News. Hundreds of officers ran to help, and the remaining students were brought out single file. They eventually cleared the school and declared the area as safe.
A reunification area was set up at Bergen Meadow Elementary, a nearby school, for the high schoolers to reunite with their guardians. However, parents say the reunification was messy. Since many of the students were at lunch, they did not know the drill for a shooting, so they ran to somewhere they considered safe.
Around the same time, political figure Charlie Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University while giving a speech for an event. The event was meant to be a kickoff to his “American Comeback” tour; however, it was his first and his last. He had just mentioned mass shootings as a part of his speech when the first and fatal shot rang out. He was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after. There were no other victims.
The shooter was said to have taken the shot from the rooftop of a nearby building, and they were suspected to be the only one, with no accomplices.
The manhunt still continues as the FBI and other officers search for leads, asking everyone in neighboring areas for any information about the culprit. Two potential suspects were arrested but released soon after, according to ABC News.
