On October 15 of 2025, Republican Governor Jim Justice’s English Bulldog, Babydog Justice, commemorated her sixth birthday, which drew attention from both supporters and critics.
“I’m doing it because it’s Babydog’s birthday, and I love her to death,” explained the governor, acknowledging the timing of the lighthearted celebration despite the ongoing tense political moments.
The celebration took place as the government declared a shutdown, leaving many federal employees without pay. Lawmakers have yet to reach an agreement on the budget, prolonging the standoff that began earlier in October.
The invitation, posted on X, guaranteed lots of cake, “Belly Rub Diplomacy,” “Bipartisan biscuit distribution” and “Tail Wagging Unity.”
Featured on the post, a quote that came from Babydog, the “America’s Chief Happiness Officer,” read, “Because no matter what’s going on in Washington…there’s always room for cake, cuddles, and good company.”
Dozens of Capitol Hill staffers waited in line that extended throughout the interior of the building to take place in the celebration. This event featured drinks, balloons and even sweet treats modeled after the pup herself to wish her a happy birthday. The English Bulldog appeared in a darling pink outfit, topped with a pink party hat as the governor greeted both democrats and republicans alike.
Being Justice’s sidekick has not only attracted attention for Babydog, but has made her a political icon. Babydog was spotted appearing alongside Justice at public events and press conferences, serving as a diplomatic mascot. The governor has used her image in various public campaigns, including tourism promotions.
Reactions about the celebration varied. Supporters such as Deputy Chief of Staff, Rebecca Blaine noted, “People know Babydog here and they love her,” as a moment of lightheartedness during political upheaval, while critics questioned the idea of hosting a party during a government shutdown.
As negotiations about the budget drag out, Justice adds, “To be perfectly honest, I think what is going on with the shutdown is not good,” as he is hoping for a speedy resolution. For now, Babydog’s birthday served as a distinct standpoint for Americans.
