North Forsyth High School put on a stunning display of decorated doors throughout the past couple of weeks for Homecoming week. From purple people-eating monsters to Eiffel Towers, the classroom doors were decorated with numerous mediums and displayed an artistic talent that was absolutely stunning.
The theme for Homecoming this year was City of Lights, influenced by Paris and the Eiffel Tower. Along with a festive spirit week and a pep rally, Oct. 23 was the day doors were finalized and then judged. There were many Eiffel Towers spotted on doors, and among all the creative ideas, Anna Huffman’s room held a giant purple monster, Meighan Bassett’s classroom door was a crime scene and the band room had lyrics from Elenor Ribgy, a song from their Beetles marching band show.
Although it did not win the contest, Deanna Williamson’s door is an honorable mention for the work put into it. Decorated by junior Anjali Manoharan and a few other art students, it contained an artfully detailed Eiffel Tower designed and painted in the style of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” The famous painting has been representative for the art department, so it was fitting that it would be incorporated into the door decorating.
Manoharan revealed there was an intricate process for decorating the door. She said they had to plan, sketch and then paint the door, using a style similar to what Van Gogh did. “I tried to mimic the impressionist style that [he] used,” she explained. Replacing the traditional tree in the painting with the Eiffel Tower, the art students added their own touch to the project.
The winner of the contest, Amy Bales and her door was a simplistic style with balloons framing the door and lights strung up around the frame. One of her homebase students, Olivia Kotula, designed the door, while her students took up Raider Time and Wellness to decorate. “Our goal was to incorporate football, City of Lights, Homecoming…and overall Raider spirit,” Bales explained. Taking Kotula’s design, the students added stars and lights to complete the look.
Throughout Homecoming week, the Raiders created a fun, lively space and showed epic creativity when making those doors. Each door displayed their hard work and demonstrated Raider pride.
