Since late October, word has been spreading around the campus of North Forsyth High School regarding the DECA program’s new fundraiser, Franksgiving! Franksgiving is centered around raising money for charity and, in turn, Frank’s mustache was shaved when the goal was reached on Nov. 19.
Frank is a beloved janitor at North Forsyth High School whose mustache is impressively going on 51 years! It is almost as memorable as his kind character. He is a staple within our school and a joy to see around, as he is always lending a helping hand to those in need.
After noticing the positive impact Frank made on our staff and students, North’s DECA program approached him with an idea for a fundraiser. The concept was to raise $1,500, which was later raised to $2,000 to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The amount donated is not a set amount per purchase; instead, DECA would ask the students if they could donate after purchasing any item from the school store, as any amount would be appreciated. DECA also decided to use donation incentives, such as stickers given to those who donate toward the heartfelt cause. Advertisements for the event have been all over the school, with stickers of Frank saying, “My mustache is older than your parents!”
North’s DECA program wanted to step into action this holiday season to bring the spirit of giving not only to North Forsyth but also to anyone in need of care. DECA member Vrushi Patel said, “Our fundraiser definitely helped bring the North community together.” St. Jude is a non-profit organization in which most of its research is funded on donations. They specialize in treating children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. St. Jude also performs all of their work without pushing the burden of heavy monetary debt onto the parents who must deal with the stress of taking care of their child.
When polling a student on how he felt about the Franksgiving fundraiser, sophomore Caleb Meeks said, “I think it’s a good opportunity to give to others while having fun in our community.” It most definitely did that, as many Raiders gathered for the shaving of Frank’s mustache. The students had heartfelt sentiments in knowing they did not only reach their fundraiser goal, but exceed it to over $2,000. Due to the high participation, DECAs fundraiser will continue to take donations until Dec. 3.
These kinds of fundraisers not only have a good cause, but also uplift the entire North cluster community, overall bringing a sense of unity as we spread love and compassion this Holiday season.
