The North Forsyth High School Theatre will bring an incredible performance to the performing arts center on Jan. 24. The classic musical comedy “Guys & Dolls” will feature countless moments that bring the audience to laughter and a touch of romance.
“Guys & Dolls” follows a gambler and a missionary in 1950s New York City. Initially, the story starts out with the gambler, Sky Masterson, taking on a bet to take the missionary Sarah Brown on a date in Havana, Cuba. Eventually, she finds out about the bet and confronts Skye about it. Nonetheless, he eventually falls in love with her and tries to make amends.
The musical is adapted from the characters and story written by Damon Runyon. However, the Broadway musical was written by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling, and its lyrics were composed by Frank Loesser. The original Broadway production of “Guys & Dolls” was first performed on Broadway on Nov. 24, 1950. Following its Broadway production, Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz set out to release a movie adaptation of “Guys & Dolls.” The movie was released on Jan. 1, 1955.
Its opening night was on Jan. 23, starting at 7 p.m. Although originally scheduled for Jan 24, the performance was cancelled due to inclement weather. On Jan. 28, 29 and 30, there will still be performances starting at 7 p.m. Also, on Jan. 31, there will be two performances, one starting at 2 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m.
A freshman student, Ellie Davis, who came to the “Guys & Dolls” opening night, described it as very entertaining to watch, and she states, “I could tell the cast enjoyed it as well.”
Also, Isabelle Armistead, a freshman who played one of the background dancers, shared that her favorite part of the show was “the hot box dances, they were really fun to do.” When asked what she thought about the theater program at North, she described it as a way to express herself and how she feels more in touch with the community.
Tickets will be available to purchase both online and in person. On the Nofo Stage website, tickets will be sold for $15 for adults and $10 for students; however, there will be an extra $1 fee. In person, tickets will be sold in the lobby, 30 minutes prior to the performance starting.
