School is the place where young minds are shaped, a main source of information for children. The way a child is taught in early childhood molds the personality and identity of the person they will become. Home schooled children have a more flexible schedule, and a public school child has a more demanding schedule.
A point people make against homeschooling is that the home schooled children don’t get the socialization they need to prosper and grow. Being able to socialize or speak up is a major skill humans need to be able to survive in today’s world, and if one can’t do that, it sets them behind.
An argument against public school is the lack of control a parent has on the subjects taught or talked about in school. It is not always the subjects that are taught to make a parent angry, but the actions or words that happen between students. Between classes, in hallways or when using the restrooms are all examples of places and times that teachers can not control the conversation between students, and conversations between students are not always nice.
Both home school and public school have many pros. For example, in public school, students are able to make their own decisions. Public schools are full of clubs for every student to enjoy, middle and high schools have a selection of different classes to take and public schools often hold open school functions, giving children a chance to socialize and learn after school hours.
Positive options for home schooled children are being able to have flexible learning times. Students don’t have to get up and ready early in the morning to leave for the bus or have a parent or guardian take them to school. Instead, students are able to freely learn in their home and not sit still at a desk for seven hours. Homeschooling allows more freedom with the way a student wants to learn. Examples include learning at the kitchen table, working outside in the fresh air or even traveling the world or going on vacation and being able to bring school with you.
A big piece of learning is knowing how one learns and being able to decide where the best place is for a child to learn. Some children learn best by being able to talk with an in-person teacher at a school or doing worksheets and projects with fellow students. Other children learn best when they are able to have freedom within their learning, like being able to move around or being able to take a break from learning and coming back to it a little later in the day. Homeschooling could be the best option for one student, while public schooling is the best option for the next. It is important for students to have open options in education.
