Friday Links: Negotiations in Syria
Over the weekend Secretary John Kerry announced the agreement to the Russian proposal to dispose of the Syrian chemical weapons without military force against President al-Assad.
The proposal calls for weapons inspectors to be allowed into the country by November, and an inventory of all chemical weapons by next week. The plan is for all of the weapons to be destroyed by the middle of next year.
The various rebel groups see the deal as a loss for them, as the chances of the US getting involved on the side of the rebels is very slim due to the current negotiations. While President Obama sees the deal as an important contribution to the removal of chemical weapons in the world, many in the US government are uncomfortable with the Russians taking the lead in the negotiations.
