After all of their hard work, these committed students definitely deserved their awards. Congratulations to our Indoor Drumline on bringing home the gold!

On Saturday, March 29th, the NFHS Indoor Drumline travelled to Chattanooga, Tennessee for their final competition at the SAPA Championships.  They won 1st Place, finishing as the Scholastic A Class Champion, and were also given the Most Improved Percussion Award for the 2014 season.

The group killed it, just like they killed Red Riding Hood.

The Indoor Drumline’s thrilling show, Big Bad and Red, was a retelling of the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  It concluded with the violent death of Red, played by ballet dancer Eden Dunford, at the hands of the wolves, portrayed by the battery.  This exciting tale was created and composed by director Phillip Morgan with the help of instructors Tony Lemonds, Steve Nelson, and T.J. Choquette.

“The most memorable moment [of the competition] for me was watching our instructor Phil cry when they called out first place,” said sophomore Sean Dutra, member of the front ensemble.

Their impressive feat is made even more impressive by the fact that our school has not had an Indoor Drumline in over four years.  Our NFHS percussionists were joined by students from West Forsyth High School to make one devoted, award-winning group.

“Despite not knowing what I was getting into, it was one of the most rewarding activities I have ever participated in,” said sophomore Eden Dunford, a.k.a Red Riding Hood.  “I was constantly impressed by the dedication and talent of all the other members.”

After all of their hard work, these committed students definitely deserved their awards.  Congratulations to our Indoor Drumline on bringing home the gold!

“When you’re up close and personal with an indoor drumline crowd, drumming becomes more than just notes on a page… It becomes a way to show who you are inside,” said senior Kaleb Ainsworth, member of the snare line.  “Costume or no costume, when you step out on that floor, you can be so much more behind the drum than you could ever be without it.”
