The History of Salad Dressing
December 9, 2016
Many people enjoy adding a different flavor to their greens. Whether it is ranch, Italian dressing, etc. Since when has this wonderful invention existed? Salad dressing dates back to the ancient times!
Like now, everyone before the 21 century liked their dressing a different way. However, they could not go into a supermarket and purchase a bottled dressing sauce. Instead they prepared it in their own unique way. Any flavors they thought would mesh well with their greens they would separately mix in bowl and then add it to their salad.
Egyptians were one of the first to use dressing on their greens. They enjoyed their salads with a mix of oil, vinegar, wine and oriental spices. Babylonians, however, enjoyed theirs with only oil and vinegar. Romans and Greeks caught on quickly and began eating their vegetables with olive oil, vinegar, wine and honey.
All of these mixes were very popular, and when the word about salad dressing got to the United States, people began to create their own. The main ingredients they used were oil, vinegar and lemon. Like previously mentioned, salad dressings were not sold in stores or restaurants; that is until the turn of the century. Salad dressing became so popular that restaurant owners began to sell their concoctions to customers. Ordinary people also caught on and began making their very own to sell. Some major brands of salad dressing today have been available since 1920.
