British rock band Bring Me the Horizon has finally released their sixth in-studio album, “Amo.” The record dropped on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, with a total of 13 tracks on it. The quintet has completely reinvented their music, veering further from their metalcore roots to a more fresh, upbeat, pop-rock, adventurous sound. A vast majority of their fans have been with them since they started out in 2004 as teenagers. Lead singer Oliver Sykes has talked about how he is aware that some fans may be unhappy with their new music. With this in mind, he takes full credit for all of the risks that were taken when they released the record. He also stated, “It’s not about how pop-y it [the album] is or how accessible it is, but it’s about how we really feed into the lyrics and what we stand for…”

As for the writing process, the band spent a whole year creating the lyrics of “Amo,” a process which usually only takes them about two months. Sykes knew that he did not want to use the same sounds that made their group popular, and he didn’t want the band to repeat themselves. They wanted to make everything different. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Sykes explained how they “want to be that gateway band for people to get into rock music and keep it going.”

The central theme of this record is love and all the emotions that people can feel with it.  When translated, “Amo” (Amor) is the Portuguese word for “love.” Sykes claimed that there were a few reasons why he decided to call it “Amo.” The first is that he started to notice that the assortment of songs created for the album all revolved around love, and the second is that his wife is Brazilian and speaks fluent Portuguese. Sykes explained how saying “te amo” is really important for the couple when expressing their farewells to each other.

For Bring Me the Horizon, this album is their third top 10, and it completed a steady climb to the top of the charts. The band first reached the highest tier on the tally in 2013 with their record “Sempiternal,” which rose as high as No. 3. When they released their 2015 album “That’s the Spirit,” it missed the top by one rung, settling for No. 2.

“Amo” replaced the “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack at No. 1 on the U.K.’s album ranking, though that soundtrack did not fall far. The tremendously successful release is down to No. 2, and, depending on how well new releases perform, it could climb up to No. 1. “Amo” is now the first newly-released chart-topper of 2019.

Bring Me the Horizon will be headlining for the All Points East Festival on May 31 in London. This is the first festival the band has ever headlined in their entire music career. Right now, though, Bring Me the Horizon has had to cancel the rest of their U.S. tour due to Sykes’ rupturing of his right vocal cord. By doctor’s orders, he has been told to rest it immediately or he could be in danger of doing permanent damage. He stated how he is “gutted” that he had to end the tour on this note and he is already giving all fans refunds for their tickets.

Moving past this incident, the cities that they did get to play at included Atlanta, Orlando, Minneapolis, Nashville, Dallas, Chicago and many more. Even though Bring Me the Horizon did twist up their sound, they managed to get away with it without making it sound bad. “Amo” truly can suit any mood someone is feeling any day.
