How Much Screen Time Is Too Much?
Our entire society runs on technology and the use of computers and smartphones. This generation has spent their entire lives applying technology in everyday functions, such as schoolwork and entertainment. Anything is possible with the little device in our pocket known as the smartphone. We have everything that we need at the tips of our fingers. This makes it very easy for us to get swept up in constant screen use.
Most of today’s entertainment is on our phones. T.V. shows, movies, video games and ways of communication all keep us engaged. Many social media platforms and video games can become addicting and can take away from teenagers getting enough physical activity. Studies have shown that too much time spent on technology contributes to less focus, sleeping issues and lower scores on standardized tests. Teenagers who use more than two and a half hours of screen time tend to fall victim to these negative effects.
In today’s society, it is hard to limit the use of technology because our entire lives revolve around it. So, how much screen time is too much? Many studies recommend no more than two hours a day, not including homework, for teenagers.
Some tips and tricks to use when limiting screen time are creating screen-free times. During these times, screen use like phones, computers, and television would not be allowed. These times could include, before bed, after waking up, and mealtimes, not using a phone as an alarm, and turning off many of your notifications. Limiting screen use can help teens become more aware of their surroundings and better their physical, emotional, mental health and overall wellbeing. Not only that, but teenagers will have more time to do things such as sports, schoolwork and hanging out with friends.
