North Forsyth High School gave a big, warm welcome back to its Raiders as a new school year began! Seniors are clamoring for success in their final year of high school, whereas freshmen are just beginning the four-year-long journey. Students and teachers alike are getting back into the swing of things, and are all eager to do the best of their abilities.
A rhythm has slowly been developed. Teachers and administrative staff have been working long and hard to make this year the best it can be.
I had the pleasure of interviewing one of our administrators, Mary Garner, who has worked for our school for the past nine years. I asked her what she thought went well the first couple of weeks back, and she said, “I think getting students into their schedules and making sure that that’s a good fit and that they are signed up for the right classes.”
However, even through all the hard work and preparations, there are some things that can be improved on. “Some of the transitions in the hallway…a lot of the students are late the first couple minutes to class but as we’re progressing, we always get better with that, ” Garner answered after being asked what could have been done better.
After being asked what we could improve upon moving forward, Garner replied, “Definitely communication with the families,” she said, “and making sure that [Raider Rush is] a big portion of that, we just increase that participation, getting people in the building before school starts, having them walk their schedules, just giving them a sense of community in the building.”
While the seniors, juniors and sophomores have an understanding of high school, freshmen are grasping the concept of something completely different than what they’ve experienced thus far. Transferring to a new school is always stressful—add on the pressures of being a high schooler, and those stakes become much higher. Freshman Emmie Shelton shares her experience starting a brand new rhythm.
She said her mindset, coming in, was to stay focused and keep her grades up. Thus far, she’s done well keeping up with her schoolwork, studying, and receiving those good grades through hard work.
“I can improve on not procrastinating,” Shelton shared, “and making sure I get everything done when I want it to be.” When asked if she has been enjoying her high school year so far, Shelton said, “Yes.”
North Forsyth’s Raiders are a passionate and hardworking group. The school’s motto, Pride, Passion and Purpose, applies to everyone, teacher and student alike, in all environments. While it will be a long one, the journey is worth it.
Raiders, welcome back!
