On Feb. 10, in honor of its 30th anniversary, North Forsyth High School is hosting its first ever Sadie Hawkins Dance. The idea behind the Sadie Dance began in the 1930s when the wealthy father of “Sadie Hawkins” was worried she would not be able to find a suitor and instead he decided to organize a day dedicated to her. Women all over the town would chase after potential men and if they caught one, the man they caught would be forced to marry the girl.
Luckily for men, times have changed and we no longer chase after them to get married, however, many schools have decided to keep the costume of the Sadie Dance, in which the girls will have to ask the guys to go with them to the dance rather than vice versa.
Students at North have put together a dedicated committee who are in charge of organizing and making the idea of the Sadie Dance come to fruition. As of the first semester the committee has put in hours of time and hard work into putting together a fun and different dance for the students to enjoy.
Senior Katelyn Tillotson is the mastermind behind the creation of North’s Sadie Dance. She worked tirelessly to get permission from the school board for this new and exciting event.
When asked about the behind the scenes, Tillotson replied, “I wanted to plan a Sadie Hawkins Dance because I feel students needed to have an opportunity to have fun, and make memories with their friends. School can be stressful and overwhelming, Sadie and Sadie week provide a chance for students to set aside the pressure and chaos of school and find happiness in the current moment…”
Not only is the school hosting the dance but there will also be a Sadie Spirit Week and a Sadie Bowl. The Sadie Bowl is a dodgeball tournament between the students and the staff of North Forsyth. The Sadie Spirit Week is going to consist of themes including, Movie Monday, Rhyme without Reason Tuesday, On Wednesdays We Wear Pink, Throwback Thursday and Freaky Friday.
According to Tillotsen, “[They] have advertised the dance, and will be making announcements to promote ticket sales that are happening now! There is still so much more work to do, but I am proud of the progress the committee and myself have made.”
The committee has put in a lot of time and effort into making this dance as enjoyable as they can! Make sure to purchase tickets in the cafeteria during lunch and most importantly, enjoy the dance!
