The Royal Game

Cameron Simpson
A representation of the elements in the poem.

Chess pieces move left, right, up, down,

Make a wrong move, you’re out of the game.

It’s all diamonds and precious gowns

Everyone pining after the glory, the fame.

Apples grow on trees,

Carriages travel rocky roads.

Whispers spread like a horrid disease

Treachery, they seethe, in their cryptic codes.

The game, they call it,

All fun and play.

No one admits the truth,

Leading the naïve astray.

Spindles glow in rooms so dark,

Dragons breathe terrible flames,

All it takes is a single spark

To destroy the twisted royal’s claims.

It’s not all fun and glory,

Deceit lies around every corner.

Those who long to tell their story

Cannot for fear of being brought out of order

A single sword can start a war

A single death can end one

It’s all a twisted fantasy they adore

It’ll be a long road before all is done

The queen finally makes her move

Claiming her place on a throne so great

Now, there’s nothing else to remove.

Checkmate.

Cameron Simpson, Staff Writer
Hi! My name is Cameron Simpson. I am a freshman, and this is my first time in Journalism. I am now a staff writer here, and I deeply enjoy writing fantasy and mythology based novels (even though I haven’t been able to finish anything yet). I adore reading; some of my favorites being Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I wish to be an author someday. My goal this year is to grow in my abilities as a writer and to learn so many new techniques on how to write.
