On Nov. 22, the long-awaited “Wicked” movie was released to theaters. “Wicked” is a highly popular Broadway musical that retells the story of The Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz”. The story focuses on the “wicked” witch, Elphaba, and her unlikely bond with the “good” witch, Glinda.
The two witches come from very different backgrounds. Elphaba was born with green skin and faced backlash from those around her due to the color of her skin, while Glinda was viewed as practically perfect and adored by all she came across. When the girls first met at school, they loathed each other, but over time an unlikely friendship began to grow. The story emphasizes their backgrounds and tells the tale of how they gained their titles as good and bad witches.
Going into the movie, I knew nothing about the storyline. I had never seen the musical and was going in with a completely unbiased opinion of the movie. I also tend not to be a huge musical person, so I wasn’t sure how much I was going to love this concept. However, I loved the movie, and despite not knowing what to expect, I thought that they did a great job telling the story.
I was slightly surprised to find out that the three-hour movie only contained half of the storyline. The director did a wonderful job of going into full detail so that those who have not seen the musical would be able to clearly understand what was going on.
The movie was also full of fun twists and I thought that the casting was phenomenal. Coming from the perspective of someone who has not seen the original, I believe that this was a beautiful movie that successfully conveyed the beauty of a magical world.
Sophomore, Caroline Jennings, is a theater student with a passion for the arts. She is especially passionate about “Wicked”, considering she got to see it on Broadway in New York. According to Jennings, “[She] thought that the movie was beautiful. They did an amazing job of keeping true to the original while also adding their own spin to it.”
Overall, I believe that the filmmakers and producers did a terrific job of conveying the storyline. They kept to the things that made “Wicked” what it was and were successful in creating a headlining movie.
