Sierra McVey, better known as Sammy, has been selected for Student of the Month for her enticing and unique style.
The seventeen-year-old junior wants others to know that just because of her looks she isn’t weird or abnormal. McVey states, “A lot of people assume gothic or alternative people are weird, but most of the people I know are such sweethearts. I wish they didn’t get that bad of a label.”
When asked why she presents herself the way she does, McVey mentions her love for the style and belief that not everyone has to look the same. She believes people should be able to get out of their comfort zones and find something they find pleasure in.
She also comments on the music and community of the Gothic style. When asked, the first music artist that came to her mind was Kim Dracula. She says, “He combines a bunch of different music types together which is very interesting, I haven’t seen anyone do that before.”
In school, the hardest thing for her is keeping up with all the work from her classes. She expresses, “As you get older, the more rigorous the classes get. There’s a lot more heavy work required.
She is most interested in environmental science. McVey highlights her teacher, Owen Wickman, who makes learning fun and easy.
Regarding her future, she plans to finish high school and take a gap year to earn enough money to go to college. Attending a science or biology-focused university is important to her because she wants to study biotechnology.
Outside of school, she has started to teach herself sewing, which has sparked her interest in altering clothing for herself.
One of the things she values the most is her family and friends. McVey explains, “People are the best things you are going to have in life. You can always have someone to count on or to be there with you.”
Overall In the end McVey hopes her message of wanting people to step out of their comfort zones, make connections and not be critical of others will spread throughout North Forsyth High School. Congratulations to our student of the month Sierra McVey!
