The debate is small, but the opinion is big: is dark chocolate better than milk chocolate? Many people say no. They say milk chocolate is sweet and dark chocolate is bitter. But what’s the whole story?
While milk chocolate is sweet and delicious, dark chocolate isn’t as bitter as people believe. It’s rich in flavor, and actually a lot healthier for you. Dark chocolate has higher cocoa content and is considered less harmful for your teeth. The chocolate tastes bitter to some people because there’s less sugar inside it. If you’re wanting to cut down on carbs, dark chocolate is the way to go.
Sure, milk chocolate is considered healthy as well. It contains magnesium, which helps with your nervous system. Both milk and dark chocolate come from cacao plants, and milk chocolate contains plenty of micronutrients with strong elements to help you keep healthy. While that’s amazing and all, milk chocolate has been deemed less healthy than dark chocolate by St. Mary’s Healthcare System, Hartford Healthcare, and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Hopkins Medicine reviewed the benefits of dark chocolate, which involve balancing your immune system, combating diseases and reducing stress.
Even Professor Lupin from “Harry Potter” claimed chocolate was the all around best medicine, regardless of whether or not it’s milk or dark chocolate: “you’ll feel better.” Who doesn’t love to snack on some chocolate when studying for an AP test, or reviewing those Spanish or Russian notes?
Dark chocolate is definitely the best type in Señor García’s eyes. The Spanish III teacher said dark chocolate was by far better than milk chocolate because it “tasted more natural.” He’s right about the natural part. Dark chocolate has a natural flavor that’s not shielded by all the carbs and sugar of milk chocolate.
Yes, milk chocolate is sweeter. And yes, many people enjoy it. But if you think about it, is it worth it? Dark chocolate has been proven to be healthier, despite its somewhat bitter taste. The only reason it’s bitter is because it’s more natural, not fused with as many products to maintain true to its origins.
Suffice it to say, dark chocolate is by far the superior chocolate.
