Colleen Martin, director of the theatre department, has been selected by a unanimous vote to be teacher of the month.
Previously, before coming to North, Martin taught and directed at three other high schools in the state, and directed in both schools and community theater. When asked about her past experiences compared to now, Martin explained that “I have had the pleasure of teaching at North Forsyth for the past 4 years. What makes North differing is the sense of community and commitment to excellence that is embraced by students and staff. Each school that I have taught at had something unique that made the experience special. My first year I was at Johnson High School in Hall County. The students were excited and creative and we were able to do some fabulous shows together. I was then hired at Forsyth Central, the dedication and talent of the students was top notch. My principal was Mitch Young (now our school superintendent) and he was fabulous to work with. After two years, I moved to Lumpkin County High School to be closer to my family when my children were young. I spent 5 years at Lumpkin and enjoyed my students immensely.”
When asked what made North special to her, she said “It’s so much, from the support of the arts to the way that North still feels like a small-town with big dreams. I wasn’t always a Theatre Teacher, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
She stated that she is fortunate to get up every morning and go to work in a place that she truly enjoys with incredible teachers and students.
Martin has impacted people not just as an actor, but as an individual as well. In the words of an anonymous student: “Martin has been my favorite teacher since I first met her. Being her student has truly blessed me and helped me grow as a student, as a thespian, and most importantly, as a person.”
Teacher of the month or not, Martin has captured the hearts and minds of many of her students with her personality, love of music and song. Her commitment and interest in her job will leave a long, positive impact on the ones she teaches.
