On March 8-10, “Peter and the Starcatcher” was performed in North’s Performing Arts Center. The play is a prequel to the classic story of Peter Pan, and it takes the audience on a magical journey to how he got his name.
The adventure begins when Molly is forced onto a ship, separate from her father’s, to keep her safe. When the father’s ship falls under the control of pirates, led by the infamous Black Stache, Molly demonstrates her leadership by retrieving Queen Victoria’s treasure with the help of the lost boys Ted, Prentiss and Peter.
Addie Thompson, the junior who played the role of Ted, has been in theater since 6th grade. She confesses, “I love my character. I knew immediately when I read the script that I wanted that one.” For Thompson, getting this role was thrilling because she could act as someone similar to herself while also enjoying her time on stage with her friends. “We’re all family. We really are,” says Thompson.
Briar Bain, the junior who took on the role of Black Stache, agrees with Thomson that “Ms. Martin has done a great job making it accessible for everyone; it’s a great way to introduce people to theater.”
One of the most notable aspects of the play was the set. It perfectly portrayed the two main ships, the Wasp and the Neverland, and all the actors could climb onto the platforms to perform in a way that perfected the fantastical atmosphere. “The set and costumes pulled everything together in the end. It’s just, the show was coming together. Everything looked so cool, but then the entire set was put together it just made everything complete,” comments Bain.
Black Stache was a key character in “Peter and the Starcatcher”, and he was more often than not the center of the stage and everyone’s attention. “It sounds pretentious, but being the center of attention is so much fun,” Bain admits. Black Stache was the first lead role he has played, and he did not disappoint. “The audience loved it: it was funny, it had a nice story to it, it was something a lot of people enjoyed.” He says he will continue down the path of acting, without a doubt.
The production was executed brilliantly and the audience was fully engaged every second. “Peter and the Starcatcher” is full of adventure and comedy, and the perfect play for all ages. The entire cast and production team of NOFO stage put forth maximum effort and it truly shows.
