On Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m., the Lady Raiders showed heart and strength against the Jaguars of Seckinger High School but came up short, finishing with a final score of 21-6 in a hard-fought flag football match.
The Raiders opened with solid defensive efforts from Jaya Walker and Anna Mason, holding Seckinger scoreless early. Anticipation built throughout the entirety of the first quarter with incomplete passes from both teams, along with key tackles from Bella Gillum and Sadie Harris on the Lady Raiders.
Early in the second quarter, Ashlyn Barnett broke through on a short run, stretching the ball over the goal line for the Raiders’ first touchdown at 6:46 p.m., giving her team a 6-0 lead in the match. Unfortunately, the conversion attempt was no good, but the team carried strong momentum into halftime.
After their break, the Jaguars responded quickly. Number 16 Peyton Fountain scored midway through the third quarter, followed by a successful conversion from Brooklyn Miller, giving Seckinger a tightly-packed 7-6 lead at 7:15 p.m. Despite strong defensive stops from Harris and Emma Borque, the Jaguars found their rhythm.
In the fourth and final quarter, the stakes were high for both teams. The Raiders fought hard to keep the game in their sights, but Jaguar Lana Madanat added another touchdown at 7:22 p.m. putting the score at 13-6.
Pushing the Seckinger Jaguars even further into the lead only a minute later, Fountain successfully completed a two-point conversion, adding two more points to the touchdown.
With the clock running low and the scoreboard showing 15-6, the Lady Raiders continued to fight with Camdyn Rupert making late receptions and Borque scrambling for extra yards. Despite their strong efforts, Nalani Gainey scored a touchdown at 7:29 p.m., sealing the game for the Seckinger Jaguars only minutes later with the final score of 21-6.
Regardless of the loss, the Lady Raiders displayed determination, teamwork and grit throughout the game. With their consistent defensive plays and their relentless energy, the team looks ready to bounce back in their next game against Denmark High School.
