On Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m., North Forsyth’s boys varsity basketball team won against Creekview High’s Grizzlies in a close, competitive match. They played a non conference game, resulting in an overtime.
Before the game, David Sokol, a head coach, talked about how the game might go down. “You never know what team you’ll play,” he said. “I think [Creekview] lost many seniors, though.” The loss of seniors is a curveball for Creekview, and North Forsyth was down a couple players due to injuries. Sokol said their offense would dictate defense, and they didn’t have an exact plan of action, only to play hard and work together.
Some strengths Creekview had was physical effort, and Sokol said they “would have to match that” in their game on Saturday. He broke down the strengths of North’s team, saying they have “great defense and communication” which would be helpful when playing against such a physical team. He was confident going into the game, even with the learning curve of new players and the loss of our own seniors.
“I’m looking forward to coaching this game,” he said. He expressed how he was happy with the team he had this year, and was looking forward to seeing how they would do in the season.
During the game on Saturday, North started off strong with a starting score of 9-7, players getting in three-point shots and wracking up points for the team. Both teams used heavy defense throughout the game, doing man-to-man defense to keep players from scoring. Creekview had an advantage as their team was at full strength and North was down a couple due to prior football commitments and injuries, but North continued fighting.
Creekview portrayed a strong offense, making it difficult for North players to land the ball in the hoop. Creekview caught up to North with North gaining five fouls by the end of period two. By halftime, North was up 40-25, but that would change afterwards as Creekview came back strong, wracking up points as our team went on the defensive. During the last five minutes of the game, North and Creekview became tied, leading to a tense back-and-forth as both teams attempted scoring.
Their efforts provided results, as Creekview snatched the lead at 58-54. Just as it seemed North had lost, they scored, giving them an edge and tying once more with Creekview. At the last second, Creekview fouled, leading into an overtime. From the foul and added three-point shots from North, the Raiders picked up the win, the final score reading 75-68.
It was a well-fought game between both teams, their players putting on strong offense and defense. North matched Creekview’s physical capabilities, and even though they were down a few players, they were successful against their opponents.
