The Australian pop/rock music group 5 Seconds of Summer – also known as 5SOS, pronounced 5 sauce has taken the music world by storm. The band consists of Calum Hood (bassist and vocals), Michael Clifford (guitarist and vocals), Ashton Irwin (drummer and vocals), and Luke Hemmings (lead guitarist and lead vocals). The group started out as a trio, consisting of Luke, Calum, and Michael who sang covers and uploaded them to YouTube. After a few months, the trio became serious about what they were doing and decided that they wanted to add some edge to their sound. Michael then contacted Ashton Irwin, and after Ashton came to a band meeting, it was clear that he was the missing puzzle piece that the band needed. The four Aussie lads all have unique personalities that help shape the band in their own unique way.

Michael Clifford is definitely known for his hair; from neon pink to fluorescent blue, he always surprises fans with his new shades. He was voted (by the boys) the nerdiest and most energetic of the group. Although, when he first joined the band, he secluded himself inside his room playing Fifa, a soccer game, all day. You could say that he has broken out of his shell a bit.

Ashton Irwin, the old man of 5SOS at the age of 21, always has to be at the center of attention. He was voted to have the best smile out of the group. Never failing to crack up laughing at his own jokes, his laugh always varies depending on what mood he is in. Chirpy, loud, and the sweetest guy in the band, states that he always has to be motivated and driven.

Calum Hood is the awkward member that is laid back and goes with the flow. He remains calm in the most stressful situations, yet he still has a blast during the fun times.

The youngest in the band, Luke Hemmings, is the long legged boy who is afraid of the dark and is normally the guy who would blend into the background. He is the witty man of 5SOS, occasionally shy but then acts up. Being a fan of Penguins, a fan gave him a stuffed one for his birthday, and is now his travel companion.

The band was discovered in 2011 by Louis Tomlinson, a member of the band One Direction; he tweeted a message that said, “Been a fan of this band for a while, everyone get behind them.” From that point on, 5SOS took off into the world of fame and fans. The boys went on One Direction’s Take Me Home Tour in 2013 and the Where We Are Tour in 2014.

In between tour, they have won over ten awards and have recently won three EMA’s and won their first AMA to add to their collection. They also have a record label with Hi or Hey Records and have performed on the Jimmy Fallon show and the Ellen show. In addition, they had a new EP released on November 1 and a new live album will be released on December 8. 5SOS will no longer be touring with One Direction because they will kick off their own tour “Rock out with Your Socks Out” starting on May 4 and going until September 13 , 2015. The boys have also had many hits in Australia and in America that are abundant on the radio that include the songs: Amnesia, Good Girls, Looks So Perfect, and Don’t Stop.

5SOS has set the bar high for themselves. Fans never know what they are going to achieve next, but are always supportive and loving no matter what move they make. The Aussie band has definitely made it from a long way home.
