Over the decades, Halloween costumes have drastically evolved as people are faced with the choice of dressing up in a classic look, taking inspiration from their favorite media or even opting out of the festive tradition of dressing up altogether.
Based on a small poll taken from 14 students at North Forsyth High School, five out of 14 people, or around 36% of them, have chosen to opt out of dressing for Halloween. This decision could be based on a variety of factors, such as the desire for comfort or general lack of interest in participating in Halloween festivities. This disinterest may also be attributed to changes in social dynamics of wanting to embrace costume culture or just having a different preference of showing off Halloween spirit.
At North, three out of 14 students or, around 21% of people, chose to dress up as cliche Halloween costumes like witches, ghosts, vampires and other classics. This choice may be due to the desire for simplicity or an easy-to-recognize costume, or even due to the nostalgia factor it has. Even though this desire to dress in a classic costume is considerably low, it continues to be utilized, and shows the continuity of classic Halloween traditions.
According to the data, the majority of students decided to dress up based on characters from TV shows, movies, games, books or even music. The data showed that six out of 14 students, or around 43%, chose costumes inspired by popular media. This majority indicates an increasing influence of pop culture on Halloween costumes. These costumes allow for a more personalized and creative take on traditional Halloween attire, and reflect how Halloween celebrates pop culture more and more.
Based on recent trends, the number of people deciding to opt out of dressing up on Halloween has increased. However, with that, Halloween costumes have also shown an increase in diversity more than ever, and may even continue to grow in that direction over the years. Overall, even as participation in dressing up shifts, pop culture incorporated in Halloween costumes continues to thrive.
