I have never been one to experience “Writer’s Block”, the condition defined as “Being unable to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing,” by Oxford Languages. But, for the past month, it has hit me harder than ever before.
In the process of writing this, I have changed my topic around five different times. However, none of them stuck, so I decided to write about the one thing that has been plaguing me.
No catchy or interesting words come to mind. I feel like I am watching the days pass. Unable to keep up with everyone else.
The most common causes of this phase are feeling a sense of failure, pressure, depression, mental illness or a lack of inspiration. In the past few weeks, I have had to write a literature piece as well as an essay. With the addition of schoolwork being crammed in before fall break, I am burned out.
One method that helped me overcome this period was just writing, no matter the topic. I take long breaks when I can, and change up my surroundings. I also read a lot. It did not matter what it was, a trashy romance book, a boring article or even subtitles on YouTube.
Sometimes, it is not just writer’s block; this block can happen in any form of creativity. Whether you crochet, paint or scrapbook, it is important to take time to reflect and take breaks.
At all times, I have a list of things I want or need to do. It could be something like doing my laundry or writing an article on religious elephants. Do not feel bad for feeling stuck. It can happen to anyone! But, in the end, just know this chapter will not last forever.
