Chimpanzees are People?
May 11, 2015
Chimpanzees are seeking human rights. It all started with a chimp that was in an animal testing trial. The Nonhuman Association declared this testing inhumane and prepared a law suit against the lab at which the chimp was held. There are a lot diverse opinions surrounding this topic, and many people are taking extreme measures to ensure the chimps get their rights.
Many people argue that since the primates share 98.7% of our DNA and are able to communicate, they should be considered legal humans instead of property like all other pets. However, others say that since many other primates have an alarming number of the same DNA as us, where will the cutoff be? If we share 90% of homologous genes with cats, and 80% with cows, when are plans going to be made to set up a bank account for our furry friends? When will our beef sources get job interviews lined up?
There is a line when it comes to animal rights and activists. This case is taking it way too far. Once chimpanzees are legally people, our other primate friends will want their share in humanhood, too.
Believe what you will, but making chimps legal humans is not the right thing to do in this situation. The best option we, as HUMANS, who were born and not legalized, have is to enforce more animal protection rights. Not to make chimps people.
