Eric Schaub, who plays Ebenezer Scrooge, gives the audience a fantastic performance

On Fri. Dec. 8, the Advanced Theater Department here at North Forsyth High School put on the show, “A Christmas Carol”, a story written by Charles Dickens for the upcoming Christmas Season.  The play follows the retelling story of Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and the spirits of Christmas.

The set was in “Christmas Tradition” as one would call it. It had a fantasy element to it as the coloration of the walls would catch someone’s eye. Included within the set was a clock attached to a pendulum which moved back and forth.

When designing the set, Isabella Cavalo, the deck manager, implores that the clock pendulum was based on multiple “A Christmas Carol” movies and adaptations.

The play is fully narrated by Charles Dickens, who in the play, is voiced by Alex Payne, a student at North Forsyth High School. When asked the light-hearted question of who he would like to play if he wasn’t playing Charles Dickens, he responded, “Jacob Marley, without a doubt…it’s incredible.”

In the first half of the play, the elderly malicious man named Ebenezer Scrooge enters the stage. His dislike for Christmas is clearly shown to the audience as well as his morose feelings towards the death of his business partner, Jacob Martley. Stunned with disbelief, the ghost of his former business partner surely visits Scrooge.

Eric Schaub, a Senior at North Forsyth, played the devilish character, Ebenezer Scrooge. When asked how he memorized his lines, he exclaimed, “I find a set group of lines that are alike. [A] conversation or two conversations that happen [to be] close to each other.”

In the last half of the play, Scrooge is officially a changed man who keeps Christmas well in his heart. He shares his generosity and wealth with others and ultimately states that he will always remember the spirits who came to visit him.

The play, “A Christmas Carol” is fun for the whole family and will truly put someone in the Christmas Spirit!
