Romantic comedies, also known as “rom-coms” are an epicenter of hope for the world’s hopeless romantics. It is not unknown that people love to watch rom-coms no matter how cringy or unrealistic they may be. Whether it be a comforting Hallmark movie during Christmas, or a classic on Valentine’s Day, rom-coms are the quickest path to experiencing a form of love without having to be in a relationship.
One question on most people’s minds this month of love is, “What is the most popular rom-com ever made?” There are so many of these popular movies in the industry that it could be hard to choose which one to watch.
After a thorough investigation, the most popular rom-com among the students of North Forsyth High School has been determined to be rom-com classic, 10 Things I Hate About You.
The movie is a comical, modern, spin on popular Shakespearean play, Taming of The Shrew. This popular rom-com features a young girl who is infamous in her school for her nasty attitude and avoidance of the male gaze. Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles, is the most avoided girl in school, while her younger sister is their school’s heartthrob. A new student falls in love with the younger sister and pays the school’s degenerate, Patrick Verona, played by Heath Ledger, to ask out Stratford so he can take the younger sister on a date. The girl’s father is notorious for forbidding the youngest from dating unless Kat dates first. Following many obstacles the two end up falling in love, and it is real love.
“I really enjoy watching 10 Things I Hate About You when I am sad or having a bad day because the comedic style of the movie is very comforting. It’s easy to fall in love with the characters and find comfort in the plot, making it a very enjoyable movie to watch,” says junior Shelby Morgan.
While this movie may have been considered the most popular among the student body, there are still plenty of rom-coms available to fit anyone’s preferences. Some fit the more romantic aspects and some are more comedic. So whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a lover of the cringe moments, there will be a movie for you.
