New Music from Down Under
Nolita Knights,a charismatic indie duo hailing from Sydney, Australia has recently released their debut EP, Distance Kills. While only being composed of three songs, the release grabs hold of the listener with lush vocals, layered ambient guitars, and tasteful percussive backbeats that add pleasant nuances to the music as a whole. The band is made up of Dylan Thomas—guitar vocals, and Simon Kobler—drums, percussion, and vocals. Both of whom primarily tour with the critically acclaimed Christian group Hillsong United. The combined product that emanates from the two’s musical symbiosis is an organic, reflective blend of indie pop that saturates the listener in the vibrant emotion inlaid into the skeleton of each song. Thomas’ vocals convey a sense of detached longing, and the passion behind his lyrics is unmistakable in its clarity, while his Coldplay-esque guitar tones compliment the cadence of his words and the music itself, further helping to round out the band’s sound. Kobler’s unique musical persona bleeds its way into the framework of each composition in the guise of his minimalistic drumming that provides a familiar landscape for the bands song to breathe and mature throughout their lifespan. Distance Kills takes the reader into a reflective place lyrically with Thomas easily transitioning from lamenting on the havoc absence wreaks on relationships to declaring his hope for his entwined future with the one he loves. All in all, the two Aussie musicians have succeeded in bringing a fresh collection of heartfelt audible art to life and have provided a breath of fresh air into the heavily polluted atmosphere of the world of indie music.
