Although Valentine’s Day has passed, with prom approaching, many people are finding relationships and could be confused about what the best possible option for a gift could be, with any upcoming celebratory event. Some may think flowers, candy or maybe something more expensive, but what they are missing is that most often the best gift is the gift of one’s quality time. Most holidays are commercialized and often are overdone. Christmas is very expensive and materialized as every person hunts for the perfect gift. Halloween and fall have become materialistic as well, as social media has developed the basket trend, “boo basket,” “burr basket” and “ love basket,” creating a strong feeling of pressure to spend money on every holiday and season on the calendar with an overwhelming amount of material items.
Although gifts are touching and thoughtful, the more meaningful gift is that of one’s energy, to spend time together doing an activity and making memories. What grows a relationship is not something that can be bought, or pulled out as something from feelings of regret, but a meaningful plan of an activity together shows thoughtfulness, care, and love.
When interviewed on the subject, sophomore Rylee Lamb shared her thoughts, “Spending quality time with loved ones is so important because it strengthens bonds and creates a sense of belonging and support.” Quality time instead of material goods allows for further connections as one can learn more about their loved one and create memories together. Mini-games where their personality can shine and friendly competition can ensue, watching movies together or sharing conversation over a meal inspires opportunity to learn more about the other person and more about their thoughts and feelings. This fosters the relationship on a deeper level, making it more meaningful and prosperous.
Sophomore Emma Covington also explained her view on the subject, “quality time is so important because it forms bigger relationships…it comforts your mind and gives you a safe space to go to.” With the time spent together, trust deepens and connection altogether grows. Physical gifts are sentimental, but the true gift of one’s time and energy shows more kindness and true thoughtfulness.
