Ashton Bruce is a junior at North Forysth High School who loves going to thrift stores to find Renaissance-age art and quirky mugs for ninety-nine cents. She considers her junior year to be the prime year of her high school career and has high hopes for the rest of the year regarding her classes. When she's not in school, she is playing softball, meeting up with her friends to be the certified broke gal, or mucking around the house relaxing with her hot chocolate from her favorite painted mugs she made regardless of the temperature outside.

The next few days are the same, thinking about the trees and dirt outside, thinking about God, thinking about finding a new job, thinking about her. Some days she comes home and when it’s sunny outside, I’m on the ground and she’ll sit beside me. We’ll talk about our day and write words into the dirt before going inside to wash our hands and make dinner.

She makes the tombstones smile and the graveyard whisper compliments. I’ve always tried asking them questions—“Is it something I should really be scared of? Is there really a God, or are these whispers ghosts or my mind? What’s the point?”—but she tends to just have chitchat. She’s always been better at chitchat. The velociraptor, pictured above, is not all that you think them to be. Velociraptors, the stars of movies like Jurassic Park, every sequel after, and Jurassic World, were actually the size of lapdogs. They also had feathers.

When I’m at the top of the hill, he’s at the very edge of the rocky cliff, staring out to the forest. A creek runs through the middle, and I thought it was beautiful. I admire from afar, keeping my distance. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” I say, smiling.

I find a place with a tree, and I forget about the car as I walk to it. I sit against it, feeling my shirt ride up against the stump as the bark clings to the fabric, and I close one of my eyes. Everything is clear. I close that one, and then I open the other, and everything is the same.
