This creamy, crumb-topped macaroni and cheese is not only a great side dish for the holidays, but also one of the best comfort foods for any time of the year. It is quick and easy to make; most people already have all of these ingredients in their kitchen.

Ingredients needed to make six servings:

  • 1½ cups of uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 5 tablespoons of butter, divided
  • 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of pepper
  • 1½ cups of milk
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 ounces of Velveeta cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of dry bread crumbs

Instructions:

  • Cook the macaroni according to package instructions. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, melt four tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk.
  • Bring to a boil, then cook and stir for two minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat. Add the cheeses and stir until they melt. Gradually add milk.
  • Transfer the macaroni to a greased 1½-qt. baking dish. Pour cheese sauce over the macaroni and mix well. Next, melt the remaining butter and add the bread crumbs. Sprinkle over top.
  • Lastly, bake, uncovered, at 375° for 30 minutes or until heated through and topping is golden brown.
